Chemical reactions experiments

Como había prometido, aquí tenéis algunos añadidos al experimento que se realizó en clase sobre reacciones químicas.

Experiment 1: What does react with bicarbonate?

Elements:
-Sodium bicarbonate.
-Vinegar
-Water
-Lemon juice

Procedure:
Mix the bicarbonate with the water, the vinegar and the lemon juice separately. Write down which ones react.

Think:
Do they have anything in common?

Experiment 2: Is the reaction faster at higher temperature?

Elements:
-Sodium bicarbonate.
-Vinegar.
-Microwave.
-Thermometre
-Stopwatch

Procedure:
Put vinegar into two glasses. Take the temperature of the first glass (room temperature), and write it down. Add a teaspoon of bicarbonate and meassure the time it takes to finish the reaction (no more bubbles). Warm up the second glass and repeat the procedure (take the temperature and meassure the time it takes to react with the stopwatch).

Think:
Does it take take less time when it is hot?

Quien quiera probar nuevos experimentos sobre de qué dependen las reacciones tendrá que venir a los sábados de ciencia.

Can we use a screw to move things up?

This is a screw

Do you think that we can use a screw to move things up?

Check this video on how screws help us moving things up.

Fantastic!! Isn't it?
In the next video you can see how to build your own Archimedes screw.

Enjoy!!

How can plants make their own food?

Plants, algae and some bacterias can make their own food. That means they do not have to eat other plants or animals to use their energy.
The following video explains how they do it.

And rememeber:

Photo=light (like in photography, photograph...)
Synthesis= Putting together.

Fossil fuels and renewable energies

What are fossil fuels? How are they created?

Fossil fuels and renewable energies.

The food pyramid

Os cuelgo una pirámide alternativa que está más actualizada.

NUTRIENTS are SMALL SUBSTANCES in FOOD. They GIVE us ENERGY, MATERIALS and VITAMINS and MINERALS.
NUTRIENTS
WHAT DO THEY DO?
Proteins They give us materials to grow and repair the body
Vitamins and minerals They help the body work.
Carbohydrates They give us energy
Fats They give us energy
Fibre It helps intestines work
Water It helps the body work.

And remember: we also need fibre and water to stay healthy.

Is it healthy or unhealthy?

The excretory system

The excretory system is responsible for removing (eliminate) unwanted substances from the body. It is part of the vital function of nutrition

The circulatory system transports the waste to the excretory system.

The kidneys filter the waste and disolve it in water. The remaining (what is left) fluid (liquid, in this context) is called urine (pee).

Circulatory system

The circulatory system is responsible for transporting nutrients and oxygen around the body.

Nutrients: from the digestive system, to the rest of the body.

Oxygen: from the respiratory system, to the rest of the body.

Also, the circulatory system carries (transports) the waste (unwanted substances) to eliminate.

CO2: from the body, to the respiratory system.

Other waste: from the body, to the excretory system.

It is involved in the function of nutrition.
